Article is devoted to the genesis of the concept of «economic region». The concept of «region» is used to designate parts as a separate country, and parts of the world economy as a whole. Region- typological concept. Regions are allocated from the larger area in accordance with the defined goals and objectives. With the system approach the region is: - Relatively isolated reproductive system; - Relatively isolated socio-economic system; - Subsystem economic linkages with other regions. Region is a socio-economic spatial integrity, characterized the structure of production, the presence of all forms of ownership, concentration of population, employment, spiritual life per unit of time and space that has its own governments ( state, or republic). Place the regional economy in modern science should be viewed in two dimensions. On the one hand, the regional economy is included in science regions. On the other hand, regional economy belongs to the system of economic sciences. «Duality» of the science and its object determines especially considering the region as a subject of social and economic development. Purpose of the regional economy is not limited to providing general methodological role in regional economic research sciences. It aims to develop recommendations and proposals for the establishment and improvement of regional economic governance mechanism for the formation of scientific foundations of regional economic policy.
