One of the most important problems of modern Russia is sustainable development of rural areas, where the effective functioning of the agrarian economy occurs simultaneously with improving the quality of life of rural population. Its solution requires the development and implementation of an active policy of rural development in each region based on existing capacity and local features. In the article the comparative analysis of the level of socio-economic status of the Finno-Ugric national republics of the Russian Federation and tendencies and regularities of their development. Identify-Lena factors constraining sustainable socio-economic development of rural territories of the Republic of shares, resulting in the depopulation of rural populations and the extinction of rural settlements. Necessity of active rural development policies at the Federal, regional and local level, requiring greater attention to the problems of the location of production and the availability of basic social services for the rural population.
